2018 London Gender Summit
The Gender Summit is an international symposium which aims to bring a gender-sensitive focus to the production of scientific knowledge. Hosted in London this year, the 2018 Gender Summit will build on previous Summit’s in showing how applying a gender lens is necessary to ensure that any advances in research or innovation result in equal benefits for women as well as men.
Representation of SgWIS
This year Singapore and the Singapore Women in Science Network will be respresented on the global stage by Dr. Vandana Ramachandran (A*STAR; SgWIS) and Dr. Lakshmi Ramachandran (STEM Advocacy Institute; MBI-WIS). Dr. Vandana and Dr. Lakshmi will be presenting during the plenary session, ‘The mission, impact and future of the Gender Summit’, on 19th June. Their talk, ‘Singapore as host of the next Gender Summit – Asia Pacific, GS-AP 2019’, will be a formal announcement of our intention to host the 2019 Gender Summit in Singapore and an warm invitation to the global community to attend.
The novelty of these events is that each year they produce concrete outputs designed to influence the practise of innovation and research to more equally benefit all genders, and thereby produce stronger outcomes for nation’s intellectual and economic growth. Last year’s recommendations from the GS10 held in Tokyo, established that we must consider the ‘gender dimension’ to effectively implement the Gender-Based Innovations for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We look forward to hearing the new developments that will come from this years summit and thank our SgWIS respresentatives for ensuring that Singapore has a voice within this global platform.
